Single-Wall vs Double-Wall Boxes: Which One Does Your Shipment Actually Need?
The most common shipping mistake we see isn’t bad tape or too little bubble wrap — it’s the wrong box. A box that’s too weak crushes in transit; one that’s over-built wastes money on every order. Here’s how to pick the right corrugated grade without guessing.
What “wall” actually means
Corrugated board is made of a fluted (wavy) layer glued between flat liners. That flute is what gives a box its strength. The number of flute layers is the “wall”:
- Single-wall — one fluted layer. Light, cheap, and perfectly strong for most everyday parcels.
- Double-wall — two fluted layers glued together. Noticeably stiffer, resists crushing when stacked, and handles heavier or fragile loads.
When single-wall is enough
- Items under roughly 15–20 kg
- Clothing, books, cosmetics, most e-commerce parcels
- Boxes that won’t be stacked high in a warehouse
When to upgrade to double-wall
- Heavy items, or anything glass, ceramic, or electronic
- Boxes that will be stacked under other parcels
- Long-distance courier journeys with lots of handling
- Anything you’re shipping more than once (returns, exchanges)
The simple rule
If the box’s job is just to hold shape, single-wall wins on cost. If its job is to protect against weight, drops, or a fragile item inside, double-wall pays for itself the first time a parcel arrives intact instead of dented.
