Packing Tape Explained: Why the Cheapest Roll Costs You the Most
Tape is the part of packing people spend the least on and regret the most. A box is only as strong as its seal — if the tape lets go, the board grade never mattered. Here’s how to choose tape that holds.
Adhesive types
- Hot-melt — very high initial grip, great for heavy or fast-paced dispatch. Can soften in high heat.
- Acrylic — slightly lower initial tack but holds up far better in heat, cold, and long storage. A reliable all-rounder for India‘s climate.
- Water-activated (gummed paper) tape — bonds into the box fibres for a tamper-evident, recyclable seal. Best for heavy or high-value shipments.
Get the width and thickness right
- 48 mm (2″) — the standard width for most parcels.
- 72 mm (3″) — fewer passes needed on big or heavy boxes.
- Thicker tape (measured in microns) resists splitting and stretching under load.
Seal it properly: the H-taping method
Run one strip along the centre seam, then a strip across each end edge — forming an “H”. This locks all three flaps that tend to burst first. For heavy boxes, tape the bottom the same way.
Common tape mistakes
- Using one thin strip down the middle only
- Taping over dust or damp board (kills adhesion)
- Not pressing the tape down firmly as you apply it
