How to Choose the Right Box Size — and Why It Saves You Money
Most sellers own three box sizes and force every order into them. It feels simple — but the wrong size quietly costs you on filler, shipping, and damaged returns. Right-sizing is the fastest way to spend less without dropping quality.
Why an over-sized box is expensive
- More void fill. Empty space has to be filled, so you buy more bubble wrap or paper than the item needs.
- Higher courier cost. Many couriers charge on volumetric (dimensional) weight — a big, light box can be billed as if it were heavy.
- More movement, more damage. A product that shifts inside a loose box is far more likely to arrive broken.
How to measure correctly
Always measure internal dimensions — length × width × height — and leave about 4–5 cm of clearance on each side for cushioning around fragile goods (less for soft, non-fragile items). Buy boxes by the internal size, not the outside.
Build a small size range
You don’t need dozens of sizes. Most shops run well on 4–6 well-chosen sizes that match their actual products. If you frequently pack odd shapes, an adjustable-height box or a box you can score and fold down removes a lot of void fill.
Quick checklist before you order boxes
- List your 5 best-selling item dimensions
- Add clearance for cushioning
- Match each to the nearest stock size — round up, not down
- Keep one flat-mailer option for soft, non-fragile goods
